The authors explain the historical formation of the Giant's Causeway as a "result of a series of underground volcanic eruptions" way back 60 million years ago. It is a formation of hardened "molten basalt" into "37,000 largely hexagonal columns pushed through the surface" along the coastline. The authors describe the place as "weird" and wonderful".
