According to this reviewer, this is the "one thing" people should see in Orkney. He was particularly impressed with the fact he was allowed to "get hands-on" with the items on display, including the unique chance to "hold a 5000 year old skull". This made the museum visit "informative and fun", and she found it "amazing" how relevant things became when "you can hold it in your hand". People were trying to guess what tools were used for. This guide describes the Ibister chambered cairn as "one of the most enjoyable archaeological sights" to be had on Orkney. The farmer who discovered and excavated it "still owns it" and that means the visit is a "refreshing change" from more "usual" publicly owned monuments. The "family's private museum" allows visitors to "actually touch and admire" the craft of Neolithic man and even "examine" a skull. Then comes the "brief guided tour" of a Bronze Age burnt mound, which the guide describes as a "Neolithic rubbish dump", followed by the walk to the chambered cairn, situated "by the cliff'
