Commissioned by Ulug Beg, a Timurid ruler who was interested in learning and also well known as an astronomer and mathematician. The Ulug Beg Madrasa is built in a traditional courtyard style and decorated with blue tiles and located opposite side of the Abd al-Aziz Khan Madrasa, which is larger but was built 250 years later.
