Tom Otley considers the New York Palace as "the most notable opening" of 2006. The owners - the Italian Boscolo group - made a "painstaking and triumphant" renovation of the building, one of the city's "most famous cafes". It's a "luxury modern hotel" built around an atrium courtyard. The prices are "steep" and the hotel is "trying to distance itself" from the competition.
The inside of the hotel is "a strange mix" of new and old. The design is "extremely fashionable and good-looking" with "some of the most attractive" designs the author has seen. He likens it to a cross between "the Milk Bar in a Clockwork Orange" and "something from 2001: A Space Odyssey". This contrasts with the careful renovation of the old cafe - "one of Budapest's most famous".
The Ice Cave spa is "a spa unlike any other" but whether anyone uses it "is another matter".
