I stay in a lot of hotels and people often ask me which are the ones I remember most. Many I remember for bad reasons (mice in the beds, strange smells etc) but of the ones that really impressed me for all the right reasons, the Amigo in Brussels is well placed in my top 10. I would never have been allowed to book this under the hotel guidelines of any company I've ever worked for but when a client I was visiting booked it for us, we didn't realise it was one of the best hotels in the city. Luckily my boss was also there so he couldn't turn down my expense claim.
The Amigo has changed hands since I was there more than 12 years ago and is now part of the Rocco Forte group so if anything, it's probably even posher now than it was back then. Certain things won't have changed though, and that includes the location which is absolutely superb. It's just off the Grande Place so it's right at the heart of the historic city. The lobby was spectacular with cool stone floors that I'm sure also won't have changed (or if they have, someone should be shot for crimes against architecture). All of the rooms were different and I even checked those of a couple of my colleagues just to prove to myself that there was nothing identikit about this place. My room was very large and decorated in pale primrose yellow with exquisite soft furnishings and the most comfortable of beds. The bathroom was gorgeous too with expensive fittings and fantastic lighting. When I got back at the end of the evening after going out for dinner, someone had come in and set the lighting to low, turned down the bed and given the place a quick tidy. Turn-down service isn't rare, but this showed a bit more care than simply folding the corner of the bedspread and sticking a chocolate on the pillow.
Breakfast the next day was lovely with lots to choose from and an elegant dining area. I wanted to linger in the lobby on the comfortable sofas with all the rich and beautiful people but sadly work called and I had to go off and spout nonsense about toothpaste to a big toiletries producer. I forgot what happened at the meeting a long time ago, but I never forgot the Amigo.
