The Clifton Suspension Bridge, designed by Brunel, and "much-photographed", took no less than 28 years to build. It measures 75 metres height wise, and "spans a dramatic stretch" of the Avon Gorge. The Lonely Planet Guide describes it to be "both elegant and intriguing", as the guide compares certain "elements" to be "seemingly inspired" by "ancient" Egyptian architecture.
Lonely Planets says of it that it is "inevitable magnet" for stunt artists, and "more poignantly" suicides. The story goes that Sarah Ann Hedley jumped from this bridge in 1885, but due to her "voluminous petticoats", she was "parachuted" without injury to the earth.
