[12/02/2008] Built in 1864, The Grand Hotel, Brighton opens up onto the "seafront promenade". This Frommers review explains that this landmark was damaged by a terrorist attack aimed at Margaret Thatcher in 1984. The result being a particular challenge for the present owners, whom, the guide advises, have made the new Grand Hotel, "better than the old" one. Darwin insists in saying that it's the "most elegant Georgian re-creation in town".
Through a "glassed-in conservatory", you'll find a "grandiose" lobby, with features such as "soaring ceilings" and decorative "elaborate mouldings". The guide tells us that the rooms are of a "very high standard", most of which are "spacious" and with a good deal of "extras", such as a Play station and hospitality tray.
The standard guest rooms have all been "refurbished", the "sea-view rooms" have mini bars, the "de-luxe" have "sitting rooms and views of the English Channel" and the Romantic rooms have "double whirlpool baths".
Frommers rate the Grand Hotel with the 3 star maximum rating.
