[more]Brighton Festival has been running since 1966 and takes place over three weeks in May each year. It is an arts festival, covering theatre, dance, music, literature, delivered by shows, concerts, displays, readings and spectacle. It claims to be the largest event of its kind in England. More than 200 separate events are presented, some of which are world or UK premières, and some specially commissioned for the Festival. Traditionally, the Festival is opened by the Children's Parade through the city, in which local schoolchildren form a colourful procession and end with a performance. The whole city is involved as it covers many venues and outdoor spaces, and performances take place throughout the day and evening. Like the Edinburgh Festival, it has a separate Fringe Festival of performers bringing their own shows and adding to the variety on offer.
