On a week end break in Shetland, myself, husband & 22 year old son decided to take the fery to Maryfield HouseBressay at 1p.m. for our Sunday lunch. We arrived at 1.15p.m. and when I asked for a table, the young barmaid replied in a very un-polite tone that "There's no tables" When I asked if we could have a bar lunch, she went to the kitchen and returned with a very sharp response "No". There was only 3 local men in the bar and they were not busy. We could see through to the kitchen from the bar counter and the lady cook was preparing meals. I then asked nicely if we could wait for a table to become available. Again the barmaid entered the kitchen and when she asked, the cook looked up and said " Tell them there's nothing left". By this time it was 1.20p.m. I then asked the barmaid what time they served meals on a sunday, she replied "12 until 2p.m." I felt really angry and upset because we were not made to feel welcome or even acknowledged. There was no please or thank you from the barmaid but they found the time to take our money for the round round of drinks!! We could have had a meal in any hotel in Lerwick, but we chose to pay the £9.90 return fare on the boat to have lunch at their hotel and I feel that even if they didn't have any food left, they could have offered us a bowl of soup or a sandwich or something, after all they are suppose to be an hotel!! How can a hotel who serve Sunday lunches between 12 & 2p.m. not have any food at 1.15p.m.? It wasn't as though the place was full, there were still places available in the lounge where they were serving lunches! The barmaid was very rude and kept looking at me as she passed by serving lunches to other diners. We caught the 2p.m. ferry back to Lerwick hungry and dejected! This totally ruined our weekend and I am still very upset about the treatment we received at the Maryfield House Hotel in Bressay Shetland. I certainly will not be visiting there again and I will be writing letters of complaint to the Shetland Times (local newspaper) and the Tourist Board in Lerwick. These people should have some training in hotel management!! A smile or an acknowledgement might have tempted us to stay for another drink, but we didn't even get "goodbye" as we left. HORRIBLE PLACE!

Very unpleasant & unfriendly staff. They would be better running a kennel rather than a hotel!

Would not serve us lunch at 1.15p.m. on a Sunday afternoon because the barmaid said "There's no Tables". When asked if we could have a bowl of soup in the bar, She relied a straight No! I asked Her if we could wait for a table, she went into the kitchen (which we could see and hear into) and the cook said "Tell them there's nothing left". This is the worst hotel I have ever been in and I have travelled all over. There was no offer of any civility nor welcome. We were not acknowledged as we left and the Barman or Proprietor, was whispering about us behind his hand to one of the 3 local men in the bar, as the local guy turned around and look at us and we felt very uncomfortable. We didn't even finish our drinks. We had to take the ferry to get to this hotel and it cost us £9.90 return just to be sent away hungry and dejected! Never again will we visit this hotel and I will make sure that anyone who asks me will know how badly we were treated. I am also writing to the tourist board and the press as this has spoiled our weekend and other patrons should be warned not to expect a welcome at the Maryfield House Hotel Bressay Shetland!
