Pousada Barra Velha - Restaurant - Brazil,
Great Home Cooking at Local Maragogi Inn (06.07.2008 01:59)
The restaurant and bar at the Pousada Barra Velha is a home away from home when it comes to a relaxing atmosphere and truly home cooked dishes. Located on the north coast of Alagoas just over the border to the south of Pernambuco on AL-101, it is a great stop over for hungry travelers on their way to the Coral Coast in Alagoas to going up towards Recife along the Alagoan beaches. I have not [more...] -
Hotel São Francisco - Penedo, Brazil - March, 2006
Historical Treasure Short on Hotels (17.06.2008 13:00)
There are not a lot of lodging alternatives in Penedo. We stayed downtown at the modernistic São Francisco Hotel in one of their comfortable renovated rooms with good views of the city and river located at Av. Floriano Peixoto, 237, Centro Histórico, Penedo-Al, (82) 3551-2273. What must have been a real luxury hotel when the city was in its commercial hay day in the 50's and 60's, today is a [more...] -
Art Deco District - Miami Beach, United States of America
The Authoritative Art Deco Walking Tour (16.06.2008 03:27)
Art Deco seems always to have been associated with Miami Beach, Florida. But, until we went on the Miami Design Preservation Leagues walking tour in South Beach, I never appreciated what it was all about. Its US version is known as Streamline Moderne with its aerodynamic shapes, the relief ornamentation featuring whimsical flora, fauna and the ocean-liner motifs reinforce the image of Miami [more...] -
Caladesi Island State Park - Dunedin, United States of America
Caladesi Beach FL Declared Best in USA for 2008 (24.05.2008 00:49)
Just north of Clearwater, on the west coast of Florida, is Caladesi Island State Park, a beach that has been designated in May 2008 as the Best Beach in the USA for 2008. The year before, it was runner up. "Dr. Beach," also known as Florida International University professor Stephen Leatherman, gets national and international attention when he publishes this list annually. We visited this [more...] -
Ilha Grande - Brazil, - December, 2006
A FLOATING, SAILING HOTEL AT ILHA GRANDE, Angra do (23.05.2008 17:50)
I stayed at Ilha Grande in Angra dos Reis aboard a floating hotel; the modern 46 foot catamaran Iemanja from Latitude Charters (www.latitudecharter.com.br / en). We went with friends and occupied three of the four staterooms of the Iemanja, a Bahia 46 sailing catamaran built in a famous French shipyard. But, I am sure that individuals and couples can rent just one of the four staterooms if they [more...] -
Maragogi - Brazil,
Agricultural Settlment Turns Tourist Attraction (18.05.2008 00:00)
It is not often that an agrarian reform project becomes a tourist attraction. But, thanks to some adventurous peasants and their agricultural cooperative, Coopeagro, Maragogi, Alagoas has just such a combination. It is called the Visgueiro Tree Ecological Trail in the Assentamento Agua Fria about 15 kilometers to the north of the center of Maragogi. The trail winds through five kilometers [more...] -
Maragogi Beach - Maragogi, Brazil
Combing the Beach and Tropical Reef at Maragogi AL (05.05.2008 21:33)
The beach and reef at Maragogi Alagoas extends for 22 kilometers. It is part of what is known as the Brazilian Coral Coast. After getting to know most of the 130 kilometers of beaches and reefs of the region, I find the Maragogi beach the best all round. Not only is the lengthy beach very accessible, though at times deserted, it is distinguished by its very wide lagoon that extends all along [more...] -
Bazar - Caruaru, Brazil
You'll Find Anything at this Open Air Market (03.05.2008 23:13)
Caruaru's Bazar every Tuesday is truly one of Brazil's best known attractions - for Brazilians. It is even celebrated in many popular folk songs. Less than two hours from Recife, Pernambuco, the full market starts on Tuesdays at 4 AM in the morning and ends that evening. That's right, only on Tuesdays will you see the full spectacular version. It is huge and complete, although there is another [more...] -
Fazenda Chales de Camaragibe - Passo de Camaragibe, Brazil - April, 2008
A Dude Ranch and Tropical Beaches Combined (03.05.2008 19:41)
Near a small rural town in Brazils Northeast region, certainly the Hotel Fazenda Chalets de Camaragibe is off the beaten track. Yet, the place is so unique; I had to let you all know about it. About 68 kilometers by paved road from Maceio, the state capitol of Alagoas, Brazil, is the small town of Passo de Camaragibe. It is surrounded on one side by sugar cane plantations and on the other [more...] -
Museu do Café - Santos, Brazil
A Brazilian Historical Gem (02.05.2008 00:30)
A visit to Santos, Brazil's principle port wouldn't be complete without seeing this building, now the Coffee Museam. It is truly the focus of what made the State of São Paulo - its great agricultural production that started with coffee beans. The Museam is the building where in the 1920's through 1950's the beans were bought and sold, a sort of commodity exchange. And what a building, in fact [more...]
