[more]Brookes Reserve is situated around 3 miles out of Braintree, between the villages of Greenstead Green and Stisted.
The 60 acre nature reserve was named after its former owner, Thomas Brookes, and comprises of 40 acres of ancient woodland. The rest of the reserve are former arable fields which mostly have been planted up with native trees. Trees in the reserve include Maple, Oak, Ash, Hornbeam, Birch, Lime and the less common Wild Service Tree. The reserve offers several historic green lanes and paths for walking and bird watching, further there are 18 ponds and you will also be able to spot a variety of other local woodland creatures like deer, rabbits, fox and also butterfly species.
The park is administered by the Essex Wildlife Trust and open at all times, although the car park might be locked. Please note that dogs need to be kept on a lead at all times and that children should not stay unsupervised near the ponds.
