[more]Braintree Town Hall was a gift to the town by William Julian Courtauld, owner of a silk milk and manufacturer of fabrics, clothing and chemicals and a benefactor of the town.
The historic building overlooks the market place of Braintree and was built in the 1920's, the opening to the public was celebrated in 1928. It was designed by architect Vincent Harris who was told by Mr Courtauld that he wanted "only the best". It is one of the earliest examples of the use of reinforced concrete and sports some remarkable features such as its Renaissance style tower, stained-glass windows, frescoes depicting the history of the town in the council chamber and its grand staircase.
The Town Hall was used by the District Council until 1981 when it became too small and the council offices moved to another location. Today it is home to the Town Hall Centre, which rents out the rooms for all kinds of meeting, functions, exhibitions and weddings. There is also a gallery with a collection of paintings and the Braintree Tourist Office can also be found here.
Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5pm; Saturday 10am to 4pm
