It is a huge Gothic style Cathedral which has stood there for over 1000 years. It has been destroyed by countless fires, the latest being on July 9 1984. Since then restoration work has been continuos.
There are guided tours around the minster with the guides giving you the full history of the site which was started in the Roman occupation. They had their headquarters on this site for many years until a church was agreed to by the ruler of that time.

You can visit the Crypt, Undercroft and Treasury.Audio guide to the Undercroft, Treasury & Crypt. When the Central Tower was near to collapse, work was done to shore up its foundations. While securing the foundations that hold up the enormous Tower, workers found the remains of buildings that once existed on this site. You can see the ancient remains discovered beneath the present Minster when archaeologists worked on one of the most important sites in England.
Many years ago there was no charge for entrance but they now charged a fee of 5.00 with concessions for children and old age pensioners. School visits can also be made at a low cost per pupil. They do not recieve any money from the Government so restoration is paid for by this charge.
