[more]The Charlottenburg Mausoleum is dedicated to Queen Louise who died in 1810 and was extremely popular. The Mausoleum is located in the park that surrounds Charlottenburg Palace.
The neoclassical sandstone temple was completed in 1815 and since then houses the marble sarcophagus of the Queen. It was enlarged several times to provide space for the sarcophagi of Queen Louises husband Frederick William III (1840), Emperor William I (1888) and his wife Augusta (1890).
Several other members of the German royal family have found their last resting place in the crypt that lies beneath the temple. The crypt is not accessible to the public.
The Charlottenburg Mausoleum, as part of the Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin, is listed as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
