After reading so much about this wonderful fish market in Bergen, I was so looking forward to my trip to Torget.
I must say it was quite dissappointing. First, the market is really small. There are many stalls selling souvenirs, a few selling fruits and vegetables and of course, the central part is dedicated to fish and seafood.
The first thing that surprised me is the international staff. I was talked to in 5 different languages, rarely English and never Norwegian. Now, I know I must have the word "tourist" written on my face, but I had imagined old Norwegian fishermen, not young international students. The atmosphere wasn't bad, just different from what I expected.
On the plus side, there are a lot of delicious products to sample, and the fish does taste amazing. I tried shrimps, smoked salmon, elk and reindeer.
However, prices were outrageous -like everywhere else in Norway.
You can buy anything for lunch there: sandwiches, hot fish dishes, crabs, warm fishcakes, and also lovely fresh fruits.
I found the atmosphere to be better there at lunch time, it was much more lively than in the morning.
The fish market is easy to find (right in the centre of Bergen) and it is open every day from 7 in the morning to 4 in winter and 7 in the summer.
