Kalemegdan - Belgrade's Heartbeat
[
fizzytom
, 07/07/2011] All great cities have at least one great park and in the Serbian capital Belgrade, that’s Kalemegdan. As I travel more and more in this part of the world I’m becoming increasingly able to spot the Turkish influence so I can tell you that the name 'kalemegdan' translates roughly as fortress square, 'kale' meaning a fortress or castle, and “megdan being a derivation of “meydan which means square with the meaning of a market place, or business centre of a settlement. Kalemegdan is the oldest part of Belgrade and for a long time, it was the city itself because the whole population of Belgrade live

Kalemegdan Fortress and Park Belgrade
[
DaniUKLondon
, 26/06/2008] Kalemegdan Fortress and Park are located in the city centre at the north end of the Knez Mihailova pedestrian High Street surrounded on the west and north sides by the rivers Danube and Sava. This is a partially preserved fortress and extended large park with plenty of green and leafy relaxing areas for exploring and a bit of cover from the sun or rain underneath plenty of shade trees. The Turks called it ‘Kale' meaning field and ‘megdan' meaning battle or the Hill for Contemplation. The fortress is the oldest complex in the City. The Austrians did some building here in the 18th centur

BELGRADE- A HEART OF SERBIA III
Date published: Jun 2006
Author: barefoot777
User review
At the beginning of the review the author introduces Kalemegdan as "the most beautiful and biggest park in Belgrade" and also "the most important cultural and historical complex" with the Belgrade Fortress. She explains that the name Kalemegdan is referring to the plateau "surrounding the fortress" and explains the names origin. As we can see from the long list in this article, the attractions at Kalemegdan are numerous. The author mentions that there is an old "urban story" which says that there are tunnels under the fortress made by the Romans, which lead to "mysterious labyrinth halls"

Kalemegdan Citadel
Date published: May 2007
Author: captain oddsocks
Article
The author starts this text with a statement that Kalemegdan fortress is "Belgrades most impressive historical site" which "deserves a visit of at least a half day," as it takes up "enough space for a small town". The buildings are a "fascinating" mixture of styles, with architecture containing examples of baroque and Ottoman style fortresses. The location has made Kalemegdan and Belgrade "the most fought over" and "the most destroyed" city settlement in the world. Captain oddsocks continues to explain Kalemegdan's history, mentioning the legend which says that "the most famous Hun, Attila,

Author: Darko
Article
Situated "almost in the center of Belgrade", "the old fortress" of Kalemegdan is, as the author Darko says, one of "largest parks" in the city. In this article he explains the name of the fortress, and then he gives a brief description of its history and says that "history of a fortress is also a history of a Belgrade itself". He is mentioning the fact that the first construction was made by Celts, followed by numerous attacks and destructions by Romans, Goths and Huns, until being occupied by Ottoman Empire. Darko also occupies readers imagination with a possibility that Atila's grave is s
