[20/03/2009] This is the second Ritz Carlton in Beijng (called the "Ritz-Carlton Not-Financial-Street" to distinguish it) and is "more traditional" than the other. It is in the "booming" business district near a mall of designer label shops but with little authentic Chinese atmosphere. The Asian guests are also designer-dressed.
The room décor of "gilt" mirrors and "traditional floral" patterned furnishings had a feel of "old-world" and "excess". There were technological "conveniences", however, such as single switches to draw the curtains or switch off the lights. The "large" bathroom had "enough marble for a mausoleum", but its glass wall partition made privacy a problem.
There is a "plush" fitness centre with the "best-looking weight machines" the reviewer had seen, a "regal" steam room, sauna and hot tub and a "long, lovely" pool overlooking the city.
Room service, available 24 hours, was quick and the food "terrific". The range of choice, however, which was "appealing" on the room service menu became head-spinning at the breakfast buffet and "daunting" at the lunch buffet.
Service is top class to go with the traditional outlook, but overall the reviewer gives it a silver medal.
