Bath Abbey is England's "last great medieval church", built between 1499 and 1616, with a 19th century nave, described by the Lonely Planet Guide to have "wonderful fan vaulting". The Bishop Oliver King realized his dream by adding sculptures of angels climbing "up and down" the west façade by stone ladders. Amongst the most interesting features of the abbey are the choir stalls, which are "carved" with "mythical beasts", the "small" Heritage Vaults Museum, which explains the abbey's history and contains "fine stone bosses" and "archaeological artefacts", and the tomb of Sir Isaac Pitman (

Fodors describe Bath Abbey as being a "15th-century edifice of golden, glowing stone" which dominates the center of town and features "carved figures of angels ascending ladders" on both sides of its "splendid west front". Located "on the site of a Saxon abbey", the Abbey boasts "superb fan-vaulted ceilings" and inside has "an impression of lightness" due to there being "more than 50 stained-glass windows". Visitors are also able to enjoy "an audiovisual presentation of the abbey's history".
