Pulteney Bridge connects the imposing Pulteney Street with the centre of Bath, and you should definitely see it if you have the time. It is modelled on the famous Ponte Vecchio in Florence, but as it crosses the River Avon rather than the Arno, it is much smaller and less impressive. You should also see the bridge from the back, because it is much less sophisticated from that angle!
The bridge is lined with small specialist shops and boutiques, and is also the gateway to the river - if you go down the steps you will find a maze, a very nice little cafe with river views, and the river boats that will take you on a boat trip up the River Avon, which is also a good introduction to the surrounding countryside.
A good way to see bath is to take the riverside walk from Pulteney Bridge to the next bridge down the river in a circuit that will lead you back to Bath Abbey. Especially in the evening, it's a nice way to get a feel for the city.
