Started in 1990, the annual Krakatau Festival takes place in the town of Bandar Lampung, on the southern tip of the island of Sumatra. From here the site of the former volcano Krakatau, and its successor, the currently active Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatau), can be seen. The festival is held to commemorate the eruption of the volcano in 1883 during which more than 35.000 people were killed. During the one week festival, there are a range of artistic, recreational and cultural events, including kite flying, song contests, a mask festival, a carnival and other traditional, cultural activities. |
