St Stephen's Cathedral

The cathedral is one of Viennas landmarks, and like all the great European cathedrals it has a history of changes in style, unfinished work and some destruction. In the 14th century Duke Rudolph IV of Habsburg ordered a complete rebuilding in the Gothic style to include the two famous towers: the south tower which for its height is rare in Gothic architecture, and the north tower which remained incomplete until finished in the renaissance style in the 16th century. There is also a great bell the Pummerin which is rung at New Year. The huge roof, with its multi-coloured tiles, was destroyed in WW2 but has now been restored. Inside are many art treasures and below are the catacombs. The cathedral is open to visitors from 6am to 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 7am to 10pm Sundays and public holidays. This popular lookout tower which dominates the Vienna skyline was constructed in 1964 and includes a bungee site as well as two revolving restaurants. The tower can be accessed by the U1 subway and bus line 20B. The elevator is open from 10.00 to 24.00 daily and fees for adults are 5.50 Euro.

Visitors to the world's oldest salt mine can expect an experience that will include a boat-trip on an under-ground lake, a train ride on the railway of the mine and a go on the miner's slides.
