They Could Do Much Better

[smilepolite, 03.06.2008] Turner Field is named after Ted Turner, one time owner of the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Hawks professional sports franchises. He also owns major American television networks like CNN and TBS and TNT. And doesn't he own Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and AOL or something? I'm only pointing out all the crazy stuff that this guy owns because it's a really crappy ballpark.

There's a great view of the city skyline from the park. That's really nice. Parking was easy and so was the drive; we didn't need to go through much of Atlanta to get to the park. Just kind of hopped off the highway and there we were.

Everything's kind of bland concrete and the park isn't all that old. They built it for the Atlanta Olympics. Concession fare was standard, if a little limited as far as variety is concerned.

It's an open-air park, which in other cities is great. In Atlanta it can be considered something like torture in a baseball season that sits right in the middle of the hottest months of the year. It's hard to ignore the differences between Turner Field and other MLB parks in the south when you're sitting under that hot sun. Parks with retractable roofs that are closed in warmer weather, parks with air conditioning.

We went to a game between the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves. My husband's the baseball fan; he wants to visit all of the MLB ballparks. When there are two teams playing that I don't care anything about I have a hard time making it through nine innings. The heat made the game seem longer.

Turnout was poor, I've heard that Atlanta is a pretty bad sports town (I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings -- Houston's bad, too). The ballpark seemed in some ways to be a further indication of the lack of city-wide support for the Braves. It's like, you're a baseball team, here's a park, goodbye. The Braves are the oldest continually operated franchise in baseball. There's a ton of history and a ton of heart there, and it would be cool if they had a ballpark that showcased that spirit.

  • I wouldn't recommend visiting here unless you really like baseball, really like the Braves, or really want to experience a MLB baseball game. If you're at all uninterested the heat will make it worse.

Food and drinks are expensive, which is no surprise. It's not worse than other ballparks, but as I mentioned before, they don't have much variety. They also don't have any signature "Atlanta" items, which they could really do a lot with I think.

I gave the field a slightly higher score on architecture because I'm lumping what they've done outside into that category. They have some good statues and the park does look like an exciting place from the outside, which is fitting.

Try to remember that many of us aren't familiar with some of the acronyms - I'm guessing MLB is Major League Baseball but it could be plenty of other things. Isn't this the guy who was married to Jane [more]
