The meal we had at Barba Petros was among the more expensive (still quite reasonable in comparison to French prices for example) but also among the better we had in Greece. The restaurant is located in a prime spot by the main church on a central square of Areopoli, one of the major towns of the Mani peninsula.
The lady who served us spoke excellent English (as a re-emigrant from Canada) and the food was a great example of typical, traditional but also very well executed Greek fare which mixes robust, rustic flavours and a limited number of superb quality, local ingredients.
We had plain but lovely baked green courgettes and beans, vegetable stew with aubergine and absolutely fabulous courgette fritters. The Older Child is a conneiseur of those, having eaten them on innumerable occasions in Greece (your reviewer always had a nibble too) and these were probably the best ever, with subtle and really well blended flavours of cheese, courgette, cumin and dill.
The service was brisk and efficient and the bill, at under 40 Euro with drinks was perfectly acceptable for the quality of food we had.
