[19/03/2009] The Rocky Mountaineer runs from Vancouver and Jasper through the Rockies and was a train billed as being one of the best in the world, compared to The Orient Express both in terms of style, luxury and food. I have not been on The Orient Express, but I doubt this to be entirely true. There are two classes of travel: Red-Leaf and Gold-Leaf. We were advised, by the travel agent to take the lower class on the basis that the view is the same and the food still very good, and it is far less expensive. This proved to be false economy and requested an upgrade to Gold Leaf for the second day, where th

[02/03/2009] This is a fairly typical Marriott business hotel, but is close to the Kemlin (i.e. very central Moscow) and has the pleasant feature of being built round a courtyard with a high glass ceiling, which gives a pleasant light airy feel to the lobby area. It is a fairly expensive hotel with all of the facilities you would expect from a business hotel of this type, comfortable seating area in the fairly large lobby, off which can be found an American style bar and grill and a European / American style restaurant and conference facilities. It doesn't have much character and is certainly more internatio

[02/02/2009] The Terrace Gardens are a beautiful place to visit if you are in Richmond. They sit between the River Thames and the famous Richmond Hill Terrace near the main entrance to Richmond Park at the top of the hill. There are many park benches and lawns on which to have picnics or for children to run around. At the bottom of the hill there is a glass house similar to the ones in Kew Gardens, except far smaller.
There are beautiful trees and plants with ornate flower-beds all maintained by the local council, so there is no entry fee. About half way down the gardens there is a small cafe with a pleas

[29/01/2009] This hotel is simple clean and very inexpensive, very close to the main square in old town Krakow. The rooms are surprisingly comfortable, given the price and the hotel has plenty of character and charm in a small courtyard, set back from a small square, access through a passage through the first row of buildings. This is fairly basic accomodation, but newly decorated with new bathrooms and free internet access available, but most importantly it is right in the heart of the action in Krakow.
[19/01/2009] Brasenose College is one of the oldest colleges in Oxford and therefore in the country. It's name comes from a brass nose-shaped knocker that was on the main gate; originally called King's Hall, it became "King's Hall with the Brasen Nose" and eventually "Brasenose". It is perhaps the most central college in Oxford, next to the beautiful Radcliffe Camera, part of the university's Bodleian Library, in Radcliffe Square and St Mary's Church.
Brasenose is a small college, tiny in comparison to the more famous Christchurch or Magdalen colleges, with two main quadrangles (grassy squares around whic

[03/12/2008] The Victoria is a traditional pub just a short walk from the beach in Burnham-on-sea, which is an old Victorian sea-side resort town. The rooms are a reasonable size, newly decorated, with good modern, simple bathrooms. The pub bars are fairly busy at the weekend and there is some noise from them and from the skittles / bowling alley underneath some of the rooms, but the bars close at midnight at the weekend. Traditional pub food is served in the bars all day and a reasonable traditional B&B full English breakfast served in the morning.
[02/12/2008] Marble Hill House, next to the river Thames in Twickenham, is a beautiful Geogian, Palladian villa in Marble Hill Park. It is now an English Heritage property, originally built for Henrietta Howard a mistress of King George II. The setting is wonderful, opposite Ham House, on the other side of the river and just a few miles from Hampton Court. The grounds are used for summer picnic concerts, but for the rest of the year the park is completely open to the public for free. Visiting the house is interesting and inexpensive with well restored interior, some restored furniture and also offers grea

[08/11/2008] This hotel is in a wonderful location for visiting the Pyramids. Some rooms even have a view and the Pyramids can be seen from just outside the hotel. The rooms are reasonably comfortable, but the hotel has very little character, nor anything else to recommend it apart from its excellent location.
[06/11/2008] The Hacienda Chichen is where the archeologists lived, next to the famous Chichen Itza site, their bungalows now form some of the accommodation. Big lazy lizards wander around the garden. It is only a couple of hundred yards from the Chichen Itza site entrance, quite peaceful once the coach parties have gone back to the Yucatan beach resorts and probably the perfect place to stay.
[22/10/2008] Bear Hill Lodge is really a motel, but the rooms have the feel of individual log cabins. It is inexpensive, but reasonably comfortable and cosy and just a short walk from downtown Jasper, the shops, restaurants and bars.
