Moreover he was mayor of Amsterdam for 13 times from 1682 to 1706. Also, he was commander of the VOC and ambassador extraordinaire to the court in the United Kingdom. Nicolaes Witsen was an expert in the field of maritime construction. He wrote books that disclose a vivid recollection of the Dutch maritime construction in the 17th century.
