History Prior to becoming a world-renowned hotel, there was a defence fortress at Hotel De L’Europe’s present-day location. The fort was demolished in 1633, when the inn “Het Rondeel” was built. More than 200 years later, from 1895-6 architect Willem Hamer Jr. began remodelling this mountain of stone and red brick building in the Renaissance style, which is nowadays a city-designated landmark.
