The Dierenpark in Amersfoort was somewhere I knew that I had wanted to visit before arriving in the city. Even though we were only there for a couple of days I made sure that I had scheduled in a couple of hours to visit it as I had heard good things about it from some friends who had previously visited.
I wasn't dissapointed and am only sorry that I didn't have some extra time there.
The zoo is located outside the city centre in the area known as Birkhoven and was really easy to find as it was well sign posted.
Entry was 18.50 for adults and children over the age of 12 which I thought was a bit expensive but this is no ordinary zoo and the money was well spent.
The zoo is quite large but is easily walkable and you get a map showing you where everything is located.
It has all the usual animals that you would expect to see in a large zoo such as elephants and tigers and these bigger animals are housed in their own enclosures and I was pleased to see that they had lots of room to wander about.
The animals all seemed happy enough which is always something that I look for when visiting a zoo because there is nothing worse than sad looking animals.
You should definately give yourself at least a couple of hours just to view all the animals in the zoo and then another couple of hours to explore the rest of the parks attractions. We didn't leave enough time and I really felt rushed which is a shame as there was so much to see and do.
As well as the animals there is a zoological museum and a petting zoo for childrens with smaller animals like goats and rabbits and an adventure palyground.
The absolute best thing about the zoo and something that I have never seen anywhere else before is the dinosaur forest. Scattered about the forest are lifesized models of dinosaurs which roar and make noises. These were absolutely amazing and I as a grown man loved them so I imagine kids will think they are great.
The whole park is incredibly family friendly with so much more than the animals to keep kids occupied.
If you find yourself in the Amersfort area then I highly reccommend that you visit the Dierenpark as it is one of the best zoo's I have ever visited with lots to see and do for kids and adults alike.
