[greejn, 29/06/2010] King Alfred's Tower is an imposing monument, part of the Stourhead estate. Stourhead is an 18th century Italianate garden and lake, the first in the UK, and is situated near Mere and Warminster. The tower is 160 ft tall, and is built of brick in an unusual triangular configuration. Set in beautiful parkland and woods, it is a National Trust property.
You can climb an endless stone staircase to the top of the tower and the turret at the highest point.
