De Vere Cameron House stands right beside Loch Lomond and is a beautiful grand old building and a very expensive place to stay. For those who can't stretch to the hotel itself, or want a destination for a group holiday, there are lodges in the grounds of the hotel that are a great choice for self-catering. When you hire one of these, you still have access to many of the hotel's facilities, but you get more privacy and independence.
A friend of mine booked two of these lodges for a group of 10 people a few years ago. We had a lodge for 6 people and another for 4. They came equipped to an extraordinarily high standard with their own saunas, large TV sets, Bang and Olofsen stereos and kitchens that were equipped with more and better equipment than any of us had at home. Not all the rooms are en suite (so if you're going in a group, make sure you get there early). The lodges are triangular in profile and built of wood. They look distinctly Scandinavian in style and many have views directly onto the Loch.
There's very little in the way of shops or entertainment in the area, so it's important to come prepared with plenty of food (and drink). We catered ourselves most of the time but did eat in the main hotel building one lunch time after spending the morning in the pool and sauna with the rest of our party. It rained a lot - well it's Scotland, what do you expect - so we took advantage of the stocks of board games but when it wasn't raining, the grounds of the hotel and lodges were beautiful for walks. Just don't forget your waterproofs.
Golfers can book a round at the onsite course, and spa treatments are available from £99 for a day of treatments or you can use the gym and pools for free.
