Article
[squidge, 02.04.2007] It took Buddhist monks 700 years to carve out and decorate with sculptures and paintings, these prayer halls for worship (chaitya grihas). "Arguably the best Buddhist site in India". The 29 caves require plenty of time to visit. The author of this review advises to visit them in "reverse numerical order", to avoid the crowds and to be near to the entrance by the end of the visit. She then lists the descriptions and contents of what is, according to her, the eight most important caves. Across the river, there are visiting platforms, which give a great view of the entire stretch of the caves on the horse shoe shaped cliff. The author suggests to take cheap and easily removable shoes, as some "temple caves" may require you to take them off before entering.
