Tempio della Concordia : perhaps the best-preserved Greek temple

[pierrejacques, 21.06.2008] Fodors enthuse about the beauty of the Valley of the Temples and state that the "beautiful" Tempio della Concordia is "perhaps the best-preserved Greek temple in existence" and that it has an "exceptional state of preservation".

The Tempio di Ercole is said to be the "oldest temple complex, dating from the 6th century BC" and "some of the marble warrior figures that once decorated its pediment" can be viewed at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale which exhibits an "impressive collection of antiquities from the site". The nearby Hellenistic and Roman Quarter features some "original mosaic pavements" as well as the "foundations of some houses from the Roman settlement (2nd century BC)".

Although the Tempio di Castore e Polluce was "haphazardly" reconstructed, there are other marvels such as the "unique" albeit incomplete Tempio di Giove which "was considered the eighth wonder of the world" and is "the largest-known classical temple".
