Dating back to the 1800s, when it was " a private home", the hotel's architecture is "inspired by Scottish castles". The "pleasing" hotel, built above the Forth was later "enlarged" in order to become a hotel. The author reminds us of the historical connections evoked in the "Covenanters" part of the name. It is also "notorious" for its link with the theft of the Stone of Scone. The public rooms of the hotel are described as "cozy" with their "oak-beam ceilings" and "stone fireplaces" and the bedrooms are "dignified" but "comfortable" with "Scottish country-house style" furniture.
