[more]The Schepenhuis (Aldermen's House) was built in 1225 and is considered to be one of the oldest in the Low Countries. Almost destroyed by Ghent residents during a war, the front and western facade were rebuilt in gothic style after 1380. It burnt down again after a fireworks accident and was restored in 1886. Formerly used as the town hall today it is the deputy mayor's office.
The Belfry was erected in 1460 and has a carillon with 52 bells and is the sixth installed since the original.
The complex was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
