Het Begijnhof van Hoogstraten
The beguinage of Hoogstraten has a rural character and dates back to 1380, when 13 beguines resided here. At its height in 1664 this number had risen to no less than 160, but with the French Revolution there was a rapid decline. The baroque church was transformed into a hay-barn and the last beguine at Hoogstraten died in 1972. From then on, the condition of the 37 terraced houses deteriorated very fast and decades later this historic site was neglected. In 1991 some local inhabitants decided to form an organization to renovate the houses. The actual renovation started in 1992 and by the end of 1997 all houses had been finished and since that time the beguinage is fully occupied again. This beguinage has a baroque church, 36 houses and a barn. Hoogstraten Beguinage was listed together with other 12 Flemish beguinages as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1998.
Opening Hours: the complex is always open to the public. The museum is open from Wednesday-Sunday from 14:00-17:00 hours.
