We booked a one-week tour at this place in March/April 2008, mainly as a result of the 'excellent' marketing on the related (same owner) Coco-Tours website, Honduras.
Unfortunately we had to cancel our stay at the so-called Hotel Cabanas Tucan (part of the package) after only one night, after encountering numerous problems (without ever getting reimbursed for our deposit). While there is nothing wrong per se with this accommodation being very basic (at most), it doesn't live up to the expectations raised on the website at all - in fact, the descriptions are totally misleading (even the photo on the website is not showing the actual accommodation).
To name but a few problems: the place is not really as secluded or situated in a park as you are lead to believe (but in the midst of other settlements and villages), neither is there a private beach (rather a public one, that people also ride there cars on, a five minute walk down a side road), whats worse inspite of litarally millions of mosquitos there were no mosquito nets at all, which are usually provided even in the most modest accommodations in Honduras (and the Hondurian north coast does have malaria cases, please refer to the health sections in travel guides for that), no aircon or fans in a stuffy concrete bungalow, moreover there were no other guests in the whole place, the only (non-English-speaking) employee had no idea we were coming, it turned out all of the 3 meals that were supposed to be part of the package had to be taken somewhere else, after getting picked up by car each time...So, in short, the fact that we even ended up having to pay for the gas ourselves, when they picked us up from the airport initially, after they ran out halfway back home without any cash at hand, proved to be not just some unfortunate mishap but more of a warning sign of things to come.
As much as we were looking forward to this tour, absolutely no stars for this place, sorry.
Again, we don't have a problem with super basic accommodations, if they are advertised as such - but we do mind getting lured into a situation like that by false promises, and in the end, having to pay way too much for what you get. Plus with the disconcerting feeling of having been taken for a ride, on top.
While we cant say anything about the tour, which might be ok (even though, judging by the accommodation and the high level of disorganization, I would be carefull to expect too much), it is a shame that this sort of chaos spoiled everything else and made us leave. Lets hope that in the future they get their act together there is definitely a lot to improve.
